I met her at their home in Brentwood and was immediately taken back by how young and beautiful she was. I mean she’s stunning, right? We talked a lot about being a first time mom; the curve for her being a bit higher given that much of her family is overseas. And the difficulties of nursing and pumping and all the stuff you don’t really think about before you’re confronted with it as your reality. In any event, it’s always a pleasure to capture moments like these.

There usually is no rhyme or reason to nerves before a shoot; sometimes I feel total confidence and other times I feel timid about knocking on the front door and inviting myself in to take charge in a home I’ve never been that belongs to people I’ve never met. I didn’t have nerves going into this shoot so much as I felt pressure on myself; Kelsey confiding beforehand that she’s followed my work on instagram for sometime and never imagined actually getting a session with me ::gush gush:: . Though, in hindsight, I like the challenge of living up to a perception someone may have of me (when it’s a good one, of course). In any event, any pressure quickly dissipated; the way it does when met with warmth and sincerity. This family, they’re kind and gentle and bashful and humble and yet, somehow, still natural even with a camera in their faces.

We had plans of heading to the beach for the second half of the shoot but given the unpredictability of the beach weather this time of year, the wind had other ideas and we ended up staying at their house for the full session; which I really think was best anyways. Shooting in-home being far-and-wide my favorite location.

We’re not big on celebrations over here; well, not in the traditional way, anyway. Take birthdays, for example. More specifically, my birthday. Where the only gift I opened from Willy was a box with a folded piece of paper with a picture of a barn located just outside of Sequoia. Presents by way of experiences, if you will. And some chocolate covered caramel.

We had intentions of making it up the mountain until we saw the outline of the road, which resembled the scribble scrabble of a two year old more than it did a paved path. And given our past experiences with Hooper and his upheavals from the mere turnabouts in Tijuana, we opted to stay lakeside instead. And when taking the majestic sunset each night, I can’t say it felt like we missed out.

I’ll be sharing more from our trip to Springville soon. Still trying to get caught up here with all we’ve had going on as of late.

There are certain people that you meet in life that fill your cup; some are lucky enough to remain permanent fixtures and provide the refill when needed, others come and go but regardless of the fleetingness of it all you feel grateful to have met at all. That’s what this family was to me: a cup filler. The kind of love that fooled you into thinking emotions are tangible.

Coleen won me over immediately; offering the warmest of hugs and the coldest of beers. And the love affair grew from there. Carefree and full of the kind of beauty that runs deep into the bones. I learned of all the similarities we share, including a love for photography (as a side note, y’all should check out the non-profit she co-founded — Spectrum Inspired) as well as careers in nursing. Never mind the fact we both wait for our toenails to grow out after getting a pedicure in lieu of taking the time to use nail polish remover.

But what really blew me away about this family was the love they had for each other. You could feel it in every little interaction and you could feel the reciprocation of such from their children; something I honestly always wonder about because the good Lord knows my boys tell me they hate me often enough to make me wonder what the hell I’m doing wrong. I’m not sure what it is they’re doing right, all I know is they’re doing it right. And whatever they’re on, I want.

Sure, Coleen earned major bonus points when a huge wave hit and she went lunging for my camera bag over her children, but that’s besides the point. More to the point, I made the drive home – eager to return to my sweet Sonny (who doesn’t hate me) – feeling fulfilled.

Many thanks, Coleen & Scott, for incorporating me into your vacation plans and for letting me take a peek into what a well-run family looks like. I’d be scared to have you witness what goes on in my home and will be consulting the notes I took during our shoot.

I met the Fischer family here, in San Clemente, at a home they’ve been renting for the last several months in an attempt to escape the winter in their hometown of Colorado. I suppose I use the word ‘hometown’ freely because if you entered into conversation with these guys, you’d quickly learn that they’ve lived all over the place. All of us here in San Clemente were lucky to have them for the (relatively) short time they were here; myself, a bit bummed I didn’t run into them a earlier in their stay. I mean three kids nearly mirroring the ages of my own not to mention a dog; and an anxious one at that. One that, not unlike Jimmie, you could hear yelping from the window after we left for a walk down to the beach. We actually got the dogs (and kids) together a few days later and despite Van stepping on a cactus, all had an enjoyable time.

In any event, we spent some time playing inside, the boys quick to show off their legos, shoot me with their guns, and engage in a throwing-stuffed-animal fight. It was like I never left home. Later we made the short walk to the beach, the coastline covered in a heavy marine layer with June gloom inviting itself in just in time for this lovely family to pack up their car and make the trek back to Colorado, where hopefully the sun was waiting for them.

Childhood Unplugged

San Clemente Family Photographer-4739 San Clemente Family Photographer-4741 San Clemente Family Photographer-4763 San Clemente Family Photographer-4822 San Clemente Family Photographer-4881

Life with now three little ones has kept moving. No rest for the weary, so they say. We had a nice smooth transition for the first month or so, with neighbors and family pitching in with loads of helping hands and warm meals. What followed soon-there-after was a few stress-filled weeks with Willy unexpectedly having to travel for work and a few other curve balls that all seemed to be thrown at once, from different directions and at varying speeds.

The baby is not what makes having three children hard. It’s the other two, who oftentimes resemble caged animals; the kind that will eat the young of those that travel into their habitat.

In any event, sometimes getting their energy channeled into one direction is as simple as putting on some music, seeing who can count the most red cars on the road outside our window, and talking about all the different colors that paint the sky as the sun goes down.

And sometimes, it’s not.

Anytime I get to catch up with Dori is time well spent. The last time I photographed her and Noah together was when Noah was just a few months shy of one year old and now, nearly a year later, on the brink of his second year. It’s always a privilege to capture the relationship between mother and child, even more so the second time around; the juxtaposition with the year prior showing the growth of not only a growing little human, but also in the roles of mother and child. The way she speaks to him in her native Hungarian, the way he asks to breastfeed and the way she plays with his toes while he does.

Claudia, owner of Lil’ Bellies, contacted me just prior to my due date about doing a shoot featuring a few of her products but mostly capturing the essence of her company, the magic of childhood. We discussed different storylines but mostly let Kai and Ellie do there thing; they are friends from school and their relationship is so natural and loving. They were a pleasure to shoot and I’m so happy with how the images turned out.

It’s very rare that I get an email requesting my services for a true lifestyle session. I emphasize true because there are a lot of people out there calling shoots lifestyle sessions that are indeed entirely directed and composed. I, myself, am at times one of them. I always prefer that at least a portion of my sessions are candid in nature. I thrive on those moments when life must take over; when diapers have to be changed, cuts need a bandaid, children need to be fed, shoes need to be tied… because those are the little moments that are some of my favorite to capture. Mostly because people stop overthinking how they appear because, well, shit’s gotta get done.

I was so happy when Angela emailed me requesting an entirely candid session… I believe her words were “from bed head to breakfast” or something of the like. These images are far from perfect, with no re-dos and very minimal direction, but there lies a truth in their grainy goodness that far exceeds anything I could have orchestrated myself. And I couldn’t be more pleased with the moments captured; the love and war between siblings, the toothpaste in the sink and the inspection by a father of his son’s job of brushing his own teeth, the playfulness of a baby that is no longer really interested in nursing, and hair blowing wildly from that all powerful fan that’s so necessary in these dog days of summer.

I captured this family in their home, in Claremont, California.

My dear friend Carolyn, who participates in Childhood Unplugged with me, came out from Florida to visit and I was more than delighted when she asked me to snap some photos of her and her boys at the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel. The entire shoot was very comfortable and felt very collaborative, with more art direction than is typical of my documentary style, though I’ve come to love it nearly just as much. It feels so fulfilling to have a vision and then to execute it. And with such a beautiful artist in her own right as my subject, it was awfully easy. Her boys were a joy to work with, sweet and charming and downright handsome. A with a love like they have for their mama, it all flowed naturally and smooth. Made me think I need to get in the frame with my boys more given the fact that they love me so dearly at this point in life (hashtag: subject to change). In any event, Carolyn is all kinds of beautiful; equal parts elegant and fun.

I photographed The Hillman Family in their hometown of Portland, Oregon during my recent time spent up in the Pacific Northwest. They invited me into their beautiful 1940’s home nestled in a quiet neighborhood in the hills looking down on the city. We spent sometime inside before venturing to their backyard, which is something Aaron build himself and surprised Amy with on her birthday years ago. You better believe I came home telling Willy all about this new bar that has been set. Little Josie picked what was left of the blueberries, chased the cat, and picked some flowers for each of us. Her little curls as sweet as her smile. We finished the shoot at a park up the hill from their home.

I’d love to open myself up for more travel sessions. If you’re in the US and interested in having me out to your area, shoot me an email. It’s been such a pleasure traveling and meeting new families. And in case you missed it, I’ll be in the Northern California region October 18-21 and am looking to book a few shoots while there.

SF Photography Sessions

I’ll be shooting a wedding up in Guerneville in October and am hoping to extend my stay and open myself up for any Northern California travel sessions for anyone interested. I’ll be booking sessions October 18th through the 21st. If you’re interested in more details, please shoot me an email: ashleyjennett @ gmail.com. Childhood Unplugged | Yellowstone National Park

Taking kids to over 2 million acres of preserved beauty is kind of like making them sit in a calculus class; it’s just over their heads.
I remind myself often that it’s not about the understanding of the enormity but about the experience, the feelings, and the memories created in the presence of such enormities. So when a geyser explodes a hundred feet in the air and the boys are too busy digging dirt with their bare hands, I let it go. And when they’d rather tantrum on the boardwalk, I let that go too.
That said, they did appreciate all the wild animals (even the Bison poop, that Hooper sunk his hand into thinking it was a piece of wood) and handled all the time in the car like the true car dogs that they are. We got home after midnight so it was a long day for all of us. And yet, I can’t wait to do it again. I’m so grateful for our National Parks.
I’ll be sharing more images from our time in Montana soon. childhooduplugged1

Mother’s Day Special

mother-day-post

I never tire of shooting my boys, but when given the opportunity to shoot other people – especially when it means getting us Mamas in the frame – I’m so grateful. So Mamas, this one is for you. Tell your husbands, tell your friends. Feed my hunger (figurative hunger, but let’s not kid, literal hunger, too). Mother’s Day sessions, $595, Price includes approximately an hour of shooting in or around your home and all edited high resolution images.

And to sway you a bit more, a recent testimonial: “Ashley did not just take our pictures; anybody can do that. She captured exactly who we are as a family. She has a magical way of highlighting the idiosyncrasies and quirks that make us, us. She took the time to get to know us and was so incredibly patient with our boys, who are not always easy. Looking at our images brings tears to my eyes every time because she saw all those moments that so often go unnoticed; my hand in my son’s hair, the way our boys make my husband laugh, the Cheerios required to keep them still. These are all the things that make up parenthood that we so often forget as the days pass hectically, and Ashley has frozen these moments in time for us. We could not recommend Ashley enough, she is the best investment you could make for your family’s memories”. – Amy Bell
