We Were Wrong About America

  • From over here in Germany, I watched in horror as the numbers came in – exactly for that reason. Of course I am relieved that from January on (fingers crossed) there will be a new president, but what does that even mean if such a huge number of people really favor those positions, discriminations, racist views etc. or, at least, were willing to sacrifice other values in order to pursue a certain policy in whatever field (economy, health, immigration)?
It makes me afraid of what is still to come. And I wonder how blind I/we over here might be, too.
I wish you all strength and hope to get through the difficult times ahead!

  • So well said. I still choke up with what feels like years of grief bubbling over at how it could be this close. How can people be so willfully blind, if not, then secretly (and not so secretly) approving of his message and actions. I look now at friends and family and neighbors and think, “how could you?”. (Fictional) tax cuts aren’t reason enough to pretend that was the only reason one voted for Trump again. All those people saw exactly who he was and came out in rabid droves to support him, even as he mocked them and left them in the cold. It’s still so hard to accept. SO thankful Biden won and the popular vote gives me enough comfort to say that *at least* there are that many more of us than of them. But it still stings.

  • Wow…..so well said, and also sad. I often think I need to move, but it’s not that simple. We can only HOPE that more people will see the light.
