Bits + Pieces, The Ace Hotel {part one}

Traveling with kids is never like traveling, well, without kids. I remember our first trip with Hooper to Hawaii. He was just a few months and we left scratching our heads wondering if it was worth it but knowing, deep down, that it was not. I’m frugal in the sense that I hate to admit something that I spent money on was not enjoyable, but that trip to Hawaii simply felt like a different set of four walls. And the walls felt cold. Like concrete. I’m hinting that it felt like prison, but allow me to be blunt for a moment and actually say it felt like prison. It felt like prison.
I digress.
Since then, we’ve gotten better at traveling. We’re more experienced, we have more confidence, and we have a better perspective. The perspective part is invaluable. While we have yet to take the plunge and do a big trip, we have been doing a lot of small ones.
Willy’s still working out in Palm Springs every now and again, so we join him when we can. We brought Sarah along this time and voted her least valuable player after a night spent listening to her shake and lick and howl only to put her out on the patio to find her ripping apart the outdoor furniture. That was a hoot. But, it’s all about perspective people; so I won’t spend the whole time telling you about how Hooper would not leave his hands off Van or how the neighbors must have thought we were murdering our son when in actuality all we were doing was trying to give him a shower he was clearly not on board with because there was no bathtub. I won’t complain about the nuisances because the memory of the trip is a good one, all in all.
And that’s the thing about perspective. It’s easy to peek in on someone’s life, scroll through their photos, and think they don’t have the same day to day struggles that you do. I promise, everyone (especially those with young kids) has shitty days… or shitty parts of their day. When you travel with little ones, you have to expect this. Attitude is everything. The trip was a success, for me, because I managed to get some sun, I ate greasy food, and I didn’t kill my kids, my husband, or our dog.
And yes, I too am dying over that last photo. Maybe he’s finally starting to catch on to when I tell him to keep the peace. Part 2, coming your way tomorrow, I hope.

Bits + Pieces, Mother's Day Weekend

Mother’s Day was more about what I didn’t do than what I did. I didn’t change a diaper. I didn’t cook a meal or clean any dishes. I didn’t feel guilty about taking a nap, which leads me to what I did do: I took a nap, I ate two donuts for breakfast, I got a homemade card (my favorite) and flowers picked from our front yard, I had great cuddle time with Hooper, I wore the same romper two days in a row (I bought it for a buck at Joy’s estate sale), I had my favorite lunch delivered to me while I stayed home in the air conditioned house (it was over 100 degrees here), and had an afternoon pedicure where they served champagne with strawberries. The rest of our time was spent in the water, cuz it feels like summer over here (warning, with summer comes more of my kid’s asses all over your computer screens). By the end of the day, I felt so zapped and it made me a bit weary of our upcoming plans to drive to Arizona where it’s 90 degrees after the sun goes down.
In any event, it was a lovely weekend.
Hope all you Mama’s had a nice time celebrating as well. Click To Vote For Us @ Top Baby Blogs Directory!

Palm Springs, Part 1

I always imagined Palm Springs to be a ridiculously hip desert hideaway with sprawling mid-century homes and wall after wall begging to have you stand in front of it for a picture. Not to say I was wrong, the mid-century homes are definitely there; hiding beneath the surface like the pocket of your pants. But Palm Springs is also… weird, for lack of better words. I told Willy it reminded me of the wheelers from the Wizard of Oz; partly abandoned with an eerie mix of dessert wanderers, tourists, retired old folk, homeless, and prostitutes.
Willy’s been having to go often for work and we tag along when we can. Translation: We spend a lot of time in random hotels jumping on furniture.
Part 2 is coming your way tomorrow.

go through (sorry for the photo bomb). In any case, here’s the recap:

We spent the weekend hanging with family, celebrating a new addition that’s right around the corner (I’m going to be a first-time aunt), and even catching a spring training baseball game. The weather was perfect and waking up with the warm rays of sun beaming through the window felt good. The cows are a bigger and bigger hit with Hooper each time we come to visit.
We returned home with more than we anticipated. Sarah, as I mentioned before, had a horrible ear infection in both ears and Hooper contracted rotavirus (possibly unrelated, who knows). In any case, it was a lovely drive and a nice time spent with those we love.
Side note: Special congrats to Vera for winning the DiaNoche Designs giveaway.

Arizona, from the road

I rarely turn down a road trip. One of my favorite books is On The Road by Jack Kerouac. There’s something about being on the open road that takes me back to when Janet and I drove all the way to Louisiana and back. I love driving and I love pit stops and I love the random restaurants along the way, filled with truckers, passersby, and the few patrons that call the roadside stop home interspersed in a sea of strangers. The open road has a way of making the world feel both big and small at the same time. And I love that too.
Both boys travel well. Van gets cranky only when he’s ready to eat and I think Hoop would be content staring out the window until the car ran out of gas. We took Sarah too and there’s one secret I must share that made her a trooper as well: Benadryl.
The drive from California to Arizona is about 6 hours (8 hours with kids) and somehow we made it door to door with good attitudes albeit having to juggle back to back to back conference calls for work, poop that required a change of clothes (yup, you all know how that goes), newly scabbed knees, growling stomachs, and shotty naps. Hash tag: It won’t always work out this well.
More from Arizona to come.

Bits + Pieces

We never pass up a carnival // Sarah was begging for food last week but this week she’s begging for the mother of all ear scratchers to come visit her; she has “raging” (doc’s word, not mine) ear infections in both ears following our weekend road trip to Arizona (this dog needs to live in a bubble, I’m tellin’ ya). Anyway, I think we barely escaped it turning into a hematoma and minus the fact the meds she’s on make her incontinent, it’s improving. Now I’m just hoping the pork chop bone she inhaled after Van threw it on the ground last night passes through her delicate little body without causing any anal damage. I wish I was kidding // Oh Hooper, you’re such a sweet big brother; most of the time, anyway // Sisterly love: Hooper & Van, take notes.
Happy Friday!

We’ve done a lot of this over the past few weeks // Van, always reaching for his Mama when he’s in his Papa’s arms // An outtake from week 10 of my 52 week project (same ears, no?).

We’ve been making the most of 80 degree weather coupled with the fact our zoo pass is about to expire. Hooper is at the age where he enjoys pointing out each of the animals and Van enjoys the blue skies above. With any luck, we’ll squeeze a few more visits in the weeks to come! Don’t mind the pouty pic of Hoop above, it’s all for show.

Because of ::cough cough:: that little booger above. Hoooooooooooper….
Happy Friday. Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend.

Bits + Pieces, Arizona

We spent the other weekend in Arizona to celebrate Willy’s grandparents wedding anniversary (more to come on that later). It’s always stressful thinking about traveling with the kiddos. My mind gets overworked in the days leading up to the trip thinking of all the things we’ll need to bring with us and how we’ll fit it all and how we’ll carry it all. Packing for myself used to be overwhelming but remembering all the little things I need for the family makes me look like one giant cry baby before. After all was said and done, the only thing I forgot was Hooper’s tooth brush. And well, his teeth didn’t rott. It all went fairly smoothly, actually. Lesson to self: calm the F down.
Hooper was a trooper on the plane. We brought some snacks and toys in his trusty suitcase for the short one hour flight. As soon as the plane landed, Hoop held his two little pointer fingers up in the air and proclaimed, “ghin!” (aka “again”). So ya, it was good. Van breastfed twice and fell asleep.
The only thing cooler than the plane ride was riding the tractor and the only thing cooler than riding the tractor was sitting on the tractor to watch fireworks. Indeed, it was a nice trip. I’ll share some more photos next week.
Happy Friday!

Elf on the shelf // I love getting Christmas cards in the mail // Hoop rockin’ the Christmas jammies and sunglasses // We bought a little tree. Hooper like to sniff it. So do I // Reindeer Van // Hoop in his Christmas sweater // Been spinnin’ Christmas tunes all week // “Vanta”, part Van, part Santa // Cinnamon rolls? Yes, please // It’s been 30 to 40 degrees here in the morning. By California standards, this is freezing and we’re all complaining because that’s what we do // The boys had their pic taken with Santa. Hoop has his finger in his mouth and Van looks like Elmer Fudd, but whatever. We bought it anyway // Present wrapping. I need some elves to come help. If you know any, send em’ my way // Hoop and his beloved Mickey.

Bits + Pieces

We attended a first birthday party over the weekend // Papa enjoying papa time // It’s true, breakfast looked like this the other morning. Nothing puts a smile on my face like bacon // Van in his bumbo, hangin’ out // Someone is obsessed with his Papa’s hats. I’m still trying to get him to keep his own hats on his head // A new Atomic Ranch came in the mail. Mid-Century homes, I love you // I can’t get enough of Van’s little mouth. Just like Hooper’s. We call this his turtle expression // Hoop is quite the bookworm these days // It looks like Hoop is just lying on the floor. In reality, he’s poopin’. We’re waiting until after the new year to start potty training. I think it’s time // Corey Hart wears his sunglasses at night, Hoop wears them in the bath // We’ve been taking great care to avoid rubbing off his new tattoo. He loves it // Van in the bath // Why it’s not fun taking two little ones to the grocery store. Actually, truth be told, it looks like he’s throwing a tantrum but in reality he’s yelling “Hi-Yee” to me. Boy do I love that booger.
Happy Friday!
Oh yes, and one more from my instagram feed because I can’t get enough of it…

Bits + Pieces

Oh Hooper, I just can’t get enough of you. Your mama loves you so much. It hurts // I was re-framing some photos and came across this photo I snapped in Egypt. I found myself lost in thought, trapped in the past. It was a sweet moment. I miss days where I roamed around with a backpack on my shoulders. I’m craving a new adventure in a far away land. Who’s in? // Man oh man, I snagged this record from a consignment shop in Utah and have not been able turn it off. I’m constantly flippin’ that thing over to play again. And again. Some of the best live renditions of some of his greatest tunes. So stoked I nabbed that when I saw it // See those two fingers? It’s gotta be genetic, right? // Wham bam thank you ma’am. Killed two birds with one stone when I made one doc appointment for both boys. It’s the little things. As a side note, Hoop looks totally unimpressed, no? // Chuck Ragen. If you don’t know of him, you should. // Sarah enjoying her bim bom day. That’s what she does and that’s what we call it. Straight bim bombin’ it // I found a new room to pump in when I’m working. It’s got a large window with a lovely view. Beats pumping in empty patient rooms // Kinfolk, the most photographed magazine around, right? // And Sesame Street, because of Mr. Hooper, waiting it’s turn in line behind Paul Simon.
Happy Friday.
